Advent Pilgrimage Day 5: Tucson

From California, we begin to head east on the virtual Advent pilgrimage to the State of Arizona and one of its most interesting cities, Tucson. It is here in the Summerhaven village atop Mt. Lemmon – an oasis close to 9,000 feet above the desert – is the Byzantine Catholic Mary Undoer of Knots Shrine.

This lovely shrine recalls the medieval devotion of Mary Undoer of Knots; it is devotion out of sixteenth century Germany. At its root, it recalls that the knot of Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden was untied by the obedience of Mary when she said to being the Mother of Our Lord.

The devotion is a beautiful reminder of Mary’s role in guiding us through the ups and downs of daily life and removing the roadblocks that keep us from drawing closer to her Son. The devotion has had renewed popularity under Pope Francis, who recently remarked: “Through Mary, all the knots of our heart, every knot of our conscience can be undone.”

Concluding Psalm

The concluding Psalm for today comes from Psalm 68:

You rugged mountains, why look with envy at the mountain* where God has chosen to dwell, where the Lord resides forever? God’s chariots were myriad, thousands upon thousands; from Sinai the Lord entered the holy place. You went up to its lofty height; you took captives, received slaves as tribute, even rebels, for the LORD God to dwell.” (Psalm 68: 17-19)
