Advent Pilgrimage Day 15: Kansas City & the finger of John the Baptist

Relic of John the Baptist, courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

In the Gospel this morning, we heard the story of John the Baptist prophesying the coming of the Messiah. Did you know that the relic of the finger bone of John the Baptist – from the hands that baptized Christ – can be found in Kansas City? It is prominently displayed at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. The reliquary was purchased from the private collection of a German prince and brought here to the Mid West. A visit to the Museum is free, and what better way to celebrate Gaudate Sunday, then to pay a quick visit to view this most unique treasure.

Concluding Psalm

Let us conclude with a reflection from Psalm 80:

“O Shepherd of Israel, lend an ear, you who guide Joseph like a flock! Seated upon the cherubim, shine forth. Upon Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Stir up your power, and come to save us. O God, restore us; light up your face and we shall be saved.” (Psalm 80: 2-4)
